X-TORQ by Husqvarna is a cutting-edge new two-stroke engine technology that’s friendlier to the environment and delivers more power across a wider RPM spectrum. Two-stroke and four-stroke engines have some fundamental differences that must be understood in order to appreciate the advantages of Husqvarna’s new X-TORQ technology. First of all, they are the two different versions of gasoline and diesel engines and can be distinguished by their distinct stroke sequences. Each type of engine offers its own unique advantages and disadvantages. Four-stroke engines provide clean, flexible power and greater torque at lower speeds. They offer slower revving, are quieter and consume less fuel than two-stroke engines. However, they’re quite a bit heavier, larger and more complex than two-stroke engines, and can only be used in a fixed position. Two-stroke engines, on the other hand, provide twice the power of four-stroke engines of the same size and are more compact. They’re also lightweight, less complex (with only three moving parts) and can be used in any position. But two-stroke engines typically have the serious disadvantages of consuming more fuel, requiring large quantities of expensive lubricants and being much less durable, which means they’re less economical to run. They also emit much more pollution, generate twice the amount of noise and are less flexible (due to their narrower power band) than four-strokes.

In spite of the numerous disadvantages of two-stroke engines, they are more appropriate for powering chainsaws and other handheld construction equipment for a few reasons. For one, a chainsaw engine must have a high power-to-weight ratio, which means that it ought to be lightweight and powerful at the same time. It must also be compact, so that it’s easy to handle, and able to operate in any position. Two-stroke engines may not offer the flexibility, economy, reduced emissions and durability of four-stroke engines, but given the fact that chainsaws aren’t used for long periods of time and are only run at full speed, these disadvantages aren’t as great a concern.

Nevertheless, if it were possible to create a two-stroke engine that was as clean, economical and flexible as a four-stroke engine, that would be a significant advantage.
